  1. How are the computer labs being used? If you or another teacher is using the labs please put down some of the exercises that you are using them for so we can share the wealth. What are some ways that we could make the labs more effective, i.e. equipment and layout of course, but also planning and activities.

I've actually stopped using the labs, but instead, I'm using the encyclopedias and other reference materials in the library.

The Mac lab was in such sad shape last year, so I just abandoned it. I'd like to see those machines entirely overhauled - fix the speakers, keyboards, mice, etc. The other problem I had last year was with the kids' accounts... apparently the mac and pc logons are different for students, and it caused a nightmare of confusion.

  3. Right on Dean... I signed out the mac lab two weeks ago for my class. They simply needed a place to type. Several of the machines did not work, several of my students' sign ons did not work, it was a disaster.

  4. The lab is something that this committee really needs to examine. I think that we should come up with a list of things that we would like the lab to be able to do, a wish list if you will. If the lab was the perfect lab, how would it function?

    I'd love to see...

    1. a "class set" of computers - I have a class of 21, and I'd want at least that many
    2. a set of computers that are identical - keyboards, mice, monitors, etc.
    3. a set of fully functional computers - no broken speakers, etc.
    4. the ability for all students to effectively log on, save documents, and do what they need to do in a reasonable period of time
    5. student computer access during study halls, before school, and after school

I'd like to note that the library's computer lab is now the home of the new phone system's hub. Not only does this take up valuable space, but the incessant drone of CPU fans makes it virtually unusable as a classroom.

Stop by and stick your head in the door... you'd be amazed.

  8. I'm aware of the noise issue, as well as the logistical problem posed by the phone system being housed in there. Part of the issue is that the library classroom was never designed to be doing what it is currently doing. It was designed to be a classroom and retrofitted into a lab. This is an issue that we need some admin input and guidance on. I will schedule a meeting with Chris on behalf of the committee.
